Synopsis
Flat Stanley opens with an introduction of the Lambchop family, Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop and their two sons Arthur and Stanley. The story begins one sunny morning as the Lambchop's are about to sit down to have some eggs for breakfast. When Stanley does not appear for breakfast the family becomes concerned, and they begin to search the house. They find Stanley on the floor in his room completely compressed by the bulletin board that had flattened him in the middle of the night. After assessing the damage it is plain to see that Stanley, once 3D, has become completely two-dimensional.

Stanley, now flat, is able to do many things that he was unable to do as his three dimensional self. Stanley travels to California to visit a friend, but not in the most conventional manner. Instead of taking a train, plain, or car, Stanley is sent through the mail in a large envelope. Stanley also experiences flying high in the sky when his brother Arthur, ties a string to his belt and uses Stanley as a kite. With all the new experiences Stanley is able to do, there is mounting jealousy felt by his brother Arthur. Stanley is faced with having to think about the feelings of others and resolve the conflict with his brother.

Flat Stanley is a wonderful story that entertains with adventure and fantasy, but also teaches a valuable lesson of listening to others, sharing one's own feelings, and finally coming to a compromised solution to the problem at hand.
